Will We Ever Go Back to Face to Face?

The idea of returning to face-to-face work has been on everyone’s mind since the pandemic forced us into our homes back in 2020. With new ways of doing things, such as remote working and virtual meetings, it’s no wonder why people are wondering if we’ll ever go back to the traditional way of doing things.

The truth is, it’s impossible to know for sure if we’ll ever go back to face-to-face work. It’s entirely possible that the pandemic has changed the way we do business permanently and remote working might become the new norm.

Pro’s of F2F work:

There’s something special about being in the same room with a team of people, brainstorming ideas and working together on projects. It’s the kind of collaboration that sparks creativity and innovation, something that can be difficult to find when working remotely.

Also, face-to-face meetings provide us with the opportunity to build relationships with our colleagues. It’s much easier to form a special bond when you can actually see someone in real life rather than through a computer screen.

Cons of F2F work:

One big issue for a company would be office space. Companies may not want to commit to a large office space with so many people working remotely.

Another problem is that it’s not always possible for everyone to be in the same place at the same time. People across different countries and continents would have difficulty meeting up in person, which could lead to complications when trying to get things done.

Another downside is that many businesses have already adapted to remote working and may not want to go back to their old ways. They’ve invested heavily into digital tools and processes and going back to face-to-face work could set them back significantly.

Pro’s of remote working

The pandemic has opened up the possibility of remote work for many people who would not have had the opportunity before. It has also made it possible for companies to hire talent from any part of the world.

Remote working also allows for more flexibility, as people can work from anywhere at any time. This means people can fit their work around other commitments such as childcare or shift-work.

It’s also much cheaper to run a business remotely than it is to have an office space. Companies will not have to pay rent and utilities for an office space as well as covering costs for supplies and furniture.

Cons of remote working

The biggest downside to remote working is the lack of collaboration that can happen when people are not in the same room. It’s much harder to brainstorm ideas and come up with creative solutions when you’re not physically present.

It can also be difficult to build relationships with colleagues when you’re not in the same space. It’ll take longer for people to get to know each other and feel connected, which could lead to a lack of trust among team members.

Finally, remote working can be isolating. Without the daily interaction of being in an office space, it can be harder to stay motivated and feeling connected with the team.

Summary

Remote work is now more accepted and embraced by many companies, which could make a full return to f2f work difficult. Plus, there is evidence suggesting that people don’t necessarily work better with direct supervision and remote working can be just as productive.

It has also presented many companies with the chance to reach a broader global audience, as well as open new markets and increase profits.

It’s possible that there will be a hybrid approach to work in the future, where people will have the option to work both remotely and face-to-face depending on the situation. At the same time, there is still something special about physical face-to-face interactions that will never be replaced.

The relationships we build, the conversations that can only happen in person and the creative ideas that come out of a team working together will always be important in the workplace.

So while the pandemic may have shifted our focus to remote work, it is likely that f2f will remain an important part of our work lives. Whether it is once a week, twice a month, or as needed, there will always be a place for face-to-face work. Weighing all the pros and cons will help you come up with the best solution for your business.

So here’s to a future of hybrid work, where everyone can have the best of both worlds!
